During the arraignment, Maldonado-Pacheco declined to hire an attorney and rejected a court-appointed public defender, expressing a desire to represent himself.
The judge did decide to issue a court-appointed attorney for Pacheco considering the extreme nature of the case. The judge said she wanted to make sure Pacheco was represented and understood his rights.
