Suspected human smuggling pursuit ends in four-vehicle fatal crash in Brownsville
Brownsville, TX (KRGV) — Three people were killed in a four-vehicle crash after U.S. Border Patrol attempted to stop a BMW 328i for suspected human smuggling.
The crash occurred on Saturday, Nov. 7, State Highway 4 and North Indiana Avenue in Brownsville.
The BMW was occupied by a U.S. citizen male driver, identified as 34-year-old Juan Munoz, and five undocumented migrants.
Munoz was taken to Valley Regional Medical Center where he later died and two migrants died at the scene of the crash.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Border Patrol tried to stop the BMW as it traveled west on State Highway 4 near FM 1419.
The BMW refused to stop and ran a red light at State Highway 4 and North Indiana Avenue. The vehicle hit a Hyundai Santa Fe, occupied by a female driver and one male child passenger, going south, causing the Hyundai to roll several times before stopping in the westbound lanes of State Highway 4.
The BMW then spun into the eastbound lanes and hit a GMC Sierra, occupied by a male driver. The BMW kept spinning and struck an Acura MDX SUV, occupied by a female driver and a child passenger.
The Hyundai occupants and GMC driver were sent to a local hospital with minor injuries, and the Acura driver refused medical attention.
The three other BMW passengers were taken to a local hospital; one was in stable condition and two were in critical condition.
The crash remains under investigation.
