Starr County officials urging people to check their animals amid new screwworm cases
Rio Grande City, TX (KRGV) — Rio Grande City animal control officials are asking people to check their pets for infected wounds after the Texas Animal Health Commission confirmed two New World screwworm cases in Starr County this week.
State animal health officials reported a screwworm case in a dog on Monday. Officials found another case in a cow on Wednesday.
If the pest spreads, it can hurt the cattle industry.
Inspectors from the Texas Animal Health Commission are inspecting cattle in Starr County to help stop the screwworm from spreading to other animals.
Most of Starr County falls under an infested zone. La Joya, Palmview, Sullivan City and parts of Mission fall under a surveillance zone for the pest.
“If they see any type of wounds or any type of larvae in their animals, immediately call us or call the Texas Animal Health Commission,” Rio Grande City Animal Control Department Director Eli Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez said he, city commissioners, and a local sale barn are discussing ways to educate people and eradicate the screwworm.
Those wanting to report possible cases of screwworm in pets and livestock can call 1-800-550-8242. To report suspected cases in wildlife, call 512-389-4505.
