Los Fresnos, TX (KRGV) — Los Fresnos voters will choose their next mayor in a runoff after the race between three candidates this week sent the election to another vote.

The two names in the runoff are incumbent Alejandro Flores and Amber Arriaga. The Los Fresnos mayoral race is the only election headed to a runoff in Cameron County.

Arriaga helps own a dairy farm in Los Fresnos and said she wants to be a voice for the community.

“They wanted to be able to bring their concerns or thoughts or opinions into city hall and people listen to them — and then not just listen, but go ahead and come up with a solution," Arriaga said.

Flores is seeking his third term as mayor.

“I will give it my all and finish a lot of these projects that we’ve started and lay a great foundation for decades to come,” Flores said.

Both candidates said improving the city’s infrastructure is a priority.

“I believe that we have drainage, sewer, water issues that really do need to be addressed before we take on bigger projects,” Arriaga said.

“We’re getting ready to upgrade a lot of the sewer and drainage manholes. On top of that, we want to piggyback with some new and improved roads for the community to have access to and also some sidewalks,” Flores said.

Arriaga and Flores finished 97 votes apart. Now both candidates are asking people in Los Fresnos to go out again to cast their ballots.

Early voting for election runoffs begin Nov. 30 and Election Day is set for Dec. 12.
