The man accused of killing four family members in San Benito has been denied bond.

Honduran national Christian Joel Maldonado Pacheco was arraigned on Monday. He was charged with capital murder of multiple persons and three counts child endangerment or abandonment.

The incident occurred on Sunday, Sept. 13 in the 32000 block of Road 819.

The judge said Pacheco was considered a safety and flight risk.

During the arraignment, Pacheco declined to hire an attorney and rejected a court-appointed public defender, expressing a desire to represent himself.

The judge did decide to issue a court-appointed attorney for Pacheco considering the extreme nature of the case. The judge said she wanted to make sure Pacheco was represented and understood his rights.

The Cameron County Sheriff's Department said the victims were a 50-year-old man, a 29-year-old man, a 28-year-old woman and a 67-year-old woman.

San Benito police said they responded to the area after a passerby reported a person on the ground on Russell Lane near San Benito.

When officers arrived, they found the 50-year-old victim dead from what appeared to be gunshot wounds. About an hour later, the sheriff's office received a 911 call from the home.

The sheriff says Pacheco made the call.

Investigators said Pacheco confessed to killing all four victims. Cameron County Sheriff Manuel Treviño said investigators are working to find out the motive.

"His motive was that he was tired of being bullied. There is nothing to corroborate that statement. There is nothing, it is only his opinion that he did it because he was tired of getting bullied," Treviño said.

Treviño said the suspected murder weapon was found outside the home.

Three children — ages nine, five and two months — were found inside the home but were not injured. They are currently with family members.

Investigators said the children were placed in danger, leading to the child endangerment charges.
