UTRGV Women's soccer drops season opener against Texas Southern
UTRGV's women's soccer team dropped its home opener 2-0 to Texas Southern in Edinburg.
It was also the first official match for Nataki Stewart in his first year as head coach of the UTRGV Women's soccer program.
Texas Southern's Jiselle Caffey scored in the 11 minute to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
In the 54 minute, a shot by Alana Aiken bounced off a defender and found the back of the net to make it 2-0.
The Vaqueros pushed back in the final 10 minutes. Londyn Johnson won a one-on-one battle and got a shot off, but the goalkeeper turned it away.
Later, Anuhea Aalona evaded the goalkeeper and shot, but a defender deflected it.
"We didn't get the result we would've liked," UTRGV Women's soccer Head Coach Nataki Stewart said. "I thought overall we missed some easy chances in the first half and we let them pay because we got a second one and the game moved away from us."
A local soccer player also made her return to the Rio Grande Valley as Gabby Gonzalez started for Texas Southern against UTRGV.
"It feels special. I know that I have so many fans here and being able to play for them on this home turf it just feels amazing and getting the win too," the McAllen High School graduate and Texas Southern sophomore defender said.
The two teams had met seven times before Sunday's match. The last time they played in Edinburg was in 2024, which ended in a Tigers win.
UTRGV will next travel to San Marcos to face Texas State, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.
