Retailers online are now accepting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for groceries.

Dr. Bob Sanborn, CEO with Children at Risk, says the expansion of SNAP is going to help people who don’t have transportation and live in rural areas. A population he estimates to be 15% to 20% of the Rio Grande Valley.

However, Graciela Camarena, program director at the Children’s Defense Fund, says while it’s a great step forward for low-income families to get food, it may not help as much as officials think.

Camarena explained several Valley families lack internet access in areas, such as Raymondville, San Perlita, Lasara and rural areas of Mission and Edinburg.
