Volunteers clean up beach at South Padre Island following Fourth of July festivities
The Fourth of July celebrations are winding down and a beach cleanup was held Sunday to pick up the litter left behind from Saturday night's festivities.
The beach clean up was organized by the South Texas Surfrider Foundation. Nearly 30 volunteers showed up Sunday morning to pick up trash.
The organization says they host the clean up every year after the Fourth of July.
"This was our dirtiest beach day of the year," South Texas Surfrider Foundation Chair Annie Zyler said. "Beaches are pretty trashed, so we try to do our part and just cleaning up a little bit, as much as we can."
The cleanup is part of a nationwide effort.
The organization says they collected more than 100 pounds of trash. They expect to collect 300 pounds by the end of the day.
