San Perlita ISD planning to reopen on Monday after closing due to COVID-19

A Willacy County school district that has been closed all week due to COVID-19 is planning to reopen on Monday, Jan. 17.

San Perlita ISD Superintendent Albert Peña said the district reopened last week but closed all campuses due to a shortage of COVID-19 tests in the district.

"By Friday [Jan. 7] we were down to 10 kits, and we didn't feel we had enough to open school back up Monday,” Peña said.

The district is hoping to fill these hallways with students as soon as they receive those testing kits. They had to close down for a week, but for the time being they are offering remote learning.

Peña says a different vendor has told them more test kits would arrive on Monday, so the district is planning on reopening - but there's still no guarantee the tests will arrive.
