Coach Jody Cantu is heading into his second season with the Mission Eagles after going 3-4 in district play and reaching the playoffs in his first year.
The Eagles lost key offensive players this offseason, including quarterback Alejandro Cano and wide receiver Shelby Sital.
Junior quarterback Lincoln Butler, who saw playing time last year as a backup, is set to take over as the starter. The team will lean heavily on the running game this season.
The Eagles have 13 returners, many of them juniors and seniors who gained experience last season before falling to PSJA North in the first round of the playoffs.
"Year two we're going to be prepared and physical, that's one thing that the community can expect," Cantu said. "Next time they come see us we'll have a well-rounded football program."
Junior running back Noah Torres has his sights set on a strong season.
"I hope to have a good record this year," Torres said. "I really want the gold ball and I hope to win the Battle of Conway and make it to the playoffs."
Butler is keeping his focus simple heading into the new year.
"1-0 mentality every week," Butler said. "Go out there and put out our best product and win."
Cantu said restoring the program's tradition is the driving goal for this season.
"I see us bringing Mission back to where it used to be," Cantu said. "There's a lot of tradition here, I hear it every day and that's the main goal. I want to bring back the fire in the community. We get a lot of support from the community; as far as administration at the school district level we have all the support we need. This is a village and we're going to bring back the flame. The old school Eagle fans know what I'm talking about."
The Eagles open the season with the Battle of Conway before non-district matchups against Donna and Economedes.
District play begins in week 4 against Nikki Rowe, followed by Palmview. The second half of the season features games against Donna North, McAllen Memorial, Rio Grande City and PSJA Memorial. The Eagles close the regular season on the road against McAllen.
