Progreso begins the 2026 season with a coaching change as Raul Bocanegra steps in on an interim basis to replace Mauricio Villegas.

Bocanegra is familiar with the program having worked for the school for 20 years. His goal for the program is to restart the junior varsity team and see steady growth from the varsity squad every single practice.

"We're implementing a system that a lot of the upper classmen are already familiar with," Coach Bocanegra said. "But just like everything, it's a refresher. It's like they're in the classroom and as us as teachers because that's our job. Us as teachers, we always have to go back and re-teach and let them know how to do the simplest things."

Progreso is still mourning the loss of quarterback Samuel Hernandez who passed away in May. The team emphasized that this season is about honoring him.

"It's definitely tough," senior defensive tackle and offensive guard Joey Luna said. "He was our leader. He was the one who led the team last year, and for me and I think most of the team this season we're dedicating it to him."

The Red Ants open the regular season on the road to take on Harlingen MMA on August 28th. They host San Diego on October 2nd to kick off district play. Their last game of the regular season takes place on November 6th at Santa Gertrudis Academy.
