The Rio Hondo Bobcats are ready for a big year in 2026.

The team returns a lot of talent from last season's squad, a team that boasted a stellar 6-1 record in district play.

Bobcats quarterback Matthew Lopez returns for his senior season after a strong first year as the starter. His top weapons are also back with Emmanuel Perez at receiver and Mario Lopez at running back.

Lopez in particular was one of the best at his position in the Valley in 2025, rushing for over 2,000 yards in 11 games and 32 touchdowns.

"It's exciting to return all of our playmakers," Rio Hondo senior quarterback Matthew Lopez said. "It's special to bring back Mario [Lopez] and Manny [Perez]... I'm really excited for this year and what we have in store for our community."

The team's star freshman from last year's squad Ty Alaniz also returns for sophomore after leading the team in tackles last fall plus Noe Leos who led the team in sacks last year.

The Bobcats fell just short of a district title with their loss to Raymondville, as the Bearkats went undefeated throughout the regular season.

"I'm really looking forward to this team," Rio Hondo head coach Rocky James said. "Losing last year could be a god send. Maybe it gets these guys fired up to go out there and fight in every game... We're pretty stacked and I'm very excited to see what we can bring out of these kids."

With mostly the same district back, the team will look to make another run at the district crown this season.

The Bobcats start the season with a matchup against Brownsville Pace on August 28th. District play starts on September 25th against Lyford and a potential district championship game looms in the season finale against Raymondville on November 6th.
