The Roma Gladiators are facing a bigger challenge this season after moving from District 15-5A Region 2 to District 16-5A Region 2.
The move means Roma goes from 4 district games to 6, with Laredo Cigarroa as the only non-Rio Grande Valley opponent. The Gladiators will also see three familiar district opponents and a new one in Juarez Lincoln.
Roma returns 8 players on defense and 7 on offense heading into the season.
"We got stronger, faster and improving on offense," said Head Coach Francisco Villanueva. "Our defense has a lot of returners coming back so we expect a lot from them. Our offense has improved dramatically and we should be really strong on both sides."
Last season, Roma finished 4 in district with a 1-3 record. The Gladiators made the playoffs but fell to Mercedes in the first round.
This year, one district win won't be enough to punch a playoff ticket.
The team's identity is clear.
"We're a run heavy team, we play smash man football and you won't see any other team that likes contact as much as we do," said Senior Center Ubaldo Hinojosa.
Roma opens the season against rival Rio Grande City, followed by La Grulla, Zapata and Raymondville. District play begins in Week 5 against PSJA.
After a bye week, the Gladiators take on Mission Vets, Juarez Lincoln and Pioneer before closing the regular season against Laredo Cigarroa.
