Officers with the Brownsville Police Department arrested one person and are still searching for another after a stolen vehicle was found near several schools, triggering lockdowns across multiple campuses.

The Brownsville Police Department said a vehicle reported stolen early Thursday morning was found around 10:54 a.m. in the alleyway between East 21st Street and East 22nd Street.

When officers approached the vehicle, two men nearby ran off. Officers caught one of them, and multiple agencies helped search for the second man but could not find him.

Because the search took place near several schools, the Brownsville Police Department notified Brownsville ISD. The district placed five campuses on lockdown or hold while officers searched the area.

The affected campuses were Canales Elementary, Faulk Middle School, Lincoln Park High School, Cromack-Castaneda Elementary and Porter Early College High School.

"Once the search was concluded, the schools lifted the hold and resumed normal operations. The recovered vehicle was returned to its rightful owner," police said.

Moody Clinic, a nonprofit outpatient clinic in the area, placed its facility on hard lockdown. The clinic later canceled all patient appointments for the rest of the day as a precautionary measure.
