WESLACO – A 19-year-old man is behind bars for pulling a gun on a homeowner, making off with a Hummer and then leading authorities on a manhunt.

Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio said Gerson Salazar is facing aggravated robbery and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle charges.

The sheriff said Salazar went to a man’s home, who he knew, on the outskirts of La Feria on Monday. He held the victim at gunpoint and demanded money and the title to the Hummer.

He got away with the vehicle and $150.

The sheriff said the man threatened the homeowner not to call authorities but the victim called anyway.

On Tuesday, the suspect went back to the home to return the Hummer. A witness called police and that’s when the suspect ran off into a sugar field.

City, county and federal agencies responded to the call which quickly turned into a manhunt.

Salazar was arrested after a U.S. Border Patrol K-9 agent found him in the field. He now has an immigration detainer.
