The new school year is underway, and getting everything a student needs at once can get expensive.

It’s why Channel 5 News teamed up with H-E-B and Communities in Schools to give a local student a back-to-school shopping spree.

For seventh grader Benito Rangel, the spree started with a simple list: pencils, binders and folders.

But somewhere between the school supplies and the checkout, his list got a little bigger.

Benito wasn't just picking out things for himself. He started grabbing things for his big sister too.

He even found ways to stretch what he picked out a little further.

"Oh, I can get the bigger pack to share with my sister," Benito said.

His mom, Veronica Rangel, said that's just who he is.

"He not only thinks about him, but his siblings and I think that's just a big blessing," Veronica said.

Benito's list didn't stop at school supplies. He picked up shampoo, toothpaste, breakfast foods, snacks, and even chicken and ground beef for home.

He also had a packed day ahead. Benito plays football on the line and had games scheduled that same morning.

He said he'd love to play football when he grows up. If that doesn't work out, he wants to pursue mechanical engineering.

After filling the cart with what he needed and a few things for the people he loves, Benito and his family walked away with a little less to worry about.

"This is such a big blessing to the community and to them. Now that they're going back to school," Veronica said.
