Hundreds of people are on a waitlist for public housing in Pharr, but a new apartment complex is nearly ready to open, providing relief to some on that waitlist.

The Pharr Housing Authority announced the completion of the Camellia Court Apartments at 920 W. Villegas St. The complex has 80 units and includes stainless-steel appliances, energy-efficient finishes, a swimming pool, and a playground.

Pharr Housing Authority Executive Director Lazaro Guerra told Channel 5 News the project was three years in the making. The housing authority could not provide the exact cost but said it was in the millions, using a mix of grant funding, federal Housing and Urban Development funds, and money from the Pharr Housing Authority.

Around 800 people are on the waitlist for government-assisted housing through the Pharr Housing Authority.

One of them is a resident of the area of the southern Pharr area who has been waiting for nearly three years. She is number 158 on the list.

"I am currently on the waitlist. I've been on it for two years... almost three," Aleixa Najar said.

For the past 11 years, she has been living with her parents, brother and daughter in public housing in the area of Las Milpas, Najar said. She wants to move out but has concerns about the new units.

She said the housing authority told residents earlier in the year that the process would take time because the apartments were still being built.

"They did tell us it was going to take a little bit because they're still building the new apartments," she said.

Housing Authority Chairman Mario Liz Cano toured the finished apartments. Liz Cano and Guerra were not available to speak on camera.

Crews are currently inspecting the finished apartments. The housing authority expects people to start moving in by at least October.

"I know at the end of the day it is a good help, but it has its pros and cons," Najar said.
