Alamo elementary students get new outdoor fitness center
PSJA ISD students at Marcia R. Garza Elementary in Alamo get to enjoy a new fitness center.
The outdoor space includes rope climbing, pull-up bars, monkey bars, and a spot for sit-ups.
Garza Elementary paid for the outdoor fitness equipment with a $26,000 grant from the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation and Project Fit America.
It took about a year and a half to complete what’s being called the “Husky fit Pit.”
The school said the fitness area will help kids stay active.
“[We’re] trying to find fun ways to get them out there, not only to have fun, but at the same time exercise and get their bodies moving to make sure that they're ready to move on to middle school and high school,” principal Marissa Santoy said. “We're kind of prepping our kids for athletics.”
School coaches were trained by Project Fit America on how to use the equipment safely.
As part of the grant, the organization will provide two years of on-site training and support for teachers.
