The McAllen Police Department is investigating an assault that was reported on the Bicentennial Hike and Bike Trail after a woman jogging early Tuesday morning was grabbed from behind by a man she didn't know.

The suspect ran off before police arrived. The woman was not hurt but was shaken up, police said.

Police released surveillance images provided by a third-party source showing a man investigators want to identify. They say he may have been involved in the assault or may have information about what happened.

"It's alarming to us as police that someone trying to enjoy themselves this morning would have to have such an encounter," McAllen Police Department spokesperson Sgt. John Saenz said. "We want to find out who this person is."

Saenz said incidents like this are not common, but when they happen, officers move quickly to find answers.

German Madrazo, head coach of the Valley Running Team, has led the group for 15 years. He offered safety tips for runners in the area.

"If you want to run with music, what I recommend is those over-the-ear headphones," Madrazo said. "Some of them are like bone conducting. And that way you can listen to your music, but you can still be aware of what's going on around you."

He recommends wearing reflective clothing, carrying a flashlight, and making sure someone knows a runner's route before heading out.

"If you live by yourself, let a friend know that you're out for a run so that people know where you're at at all times," Madrazo said.

A teenager who regularly visits a nearby park said the news caught her off guard.

"I would want to know why he did that. I feel like there's no reason," Lindsey Garcia said. "I would not feel safe as much."

Garcia said she plans to take extra precautions, including letting someone know where she is and keeping her phone close.

"I will let someone know where I am if I'm by myself so they can be aware," she said.

McAllen police said they are increasing patrols in the area and asking anyone who recognizes the person of interest to contact McAllen Crime Stoppers at 956-687-8477.
