EDINBURG – Prosecutors are working to bring a man accused of dumping a woman’s body in a septic tank to justice for his crimes.

Forty-year-old Aristeo Cervantes Jr. was set to appear before a judge Wednesday in connection with human remains found in a septic tank in Edcouch.

Court officials told CHANNEL 5 NEWS that arraignment is currently on hold.

Judge Letty Lopez with the 389th District Court issued a bench warrant for the appearance of Cervantes earlier Wednesday.

At the moment, Cervantes is serving prison time for stabbing his wife. Because of this, he could not show up for the arraignment.

The bench warrant issued Wednesday will allow Cervantes to physically show up in court for the arraignment.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS reported in late July, the current homeowners of a home in Edcouch found a shoe and a bone inside a septic tank. Investigators later recovered a skull, several rib bones, and pelvic bones.

Police said Cervantes used to live in the home and confessed to killing Leona Marie Johnson

A DNA comparison identified the remains belong to Johnson.

Johnson went missing back in March 2004. A pathologist said she was stabbed to death.

It's unknown when the arraignment for Cervantes will be rescheduled.

Court officials told CHANNEL 5 NEWS it may take up to three weeks.
