DONNA – Clean-up efforts for a Donna lake are set to start as early as next month.

After nearly a year in the making of the remedial design, which is the plan for the superfund site to get rid of the contaminants, is set to be complete as early as August.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency first detected PCBS, a group of man-made chemicals known to cause cancer in the Donna canal in 1993.

Those PCBS were found in fish from the lake.

Since then several tests and fish removals have happened to try and rid the lake of contaminants and find the source of the contaminant.

According to the EPA, a siphon is the source of the cancer causing chemical that contaminates the fish.

The EPA says they will replace the pathway of water from the canal into the Donna lake, as well as remove contaminated sediment and fish and build a new infrastructure.

According to the EPA's website, the remedial action, or official clean-up is set to start as early as September.
