A South Texas medical conference is scheduled to take place and share with the community information on what to do in case of an emergency outdoors.

Whether you're at the beach, fishing on the water, or at the ranch, the conference is about giving everyday people some of the knowledge they may need before professional help arrives.

DHR Health's Outdoor Medicine Conference was originally designed as a continuing medical education event, but organizers say it's grown beyond just educating healthcare professionals.

They're inviting the general public to learn alongside doctors and first responders.

The conference will cover how injuries are treated, as well as what can happen in the critical moments before someone reaches a hospital.

This year's topics include shark attacks, stingray and jellyfish injuries, along with information about Stop the Bleed techniques.

DHR Health Wound Care Specialist Dr. Noel Oliveira says the goal is to give people information they can actually use in any emergency.

"It's such a great opportunity for the community to get together with healthcare providers, and in this case, first responders, to show what both can do together in a community like South Texas, to help a patient or a neighbor in need," Oliveira said.

The conference is free and runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21 at the South Padre Island convention center.
