Water is back on for Sharyland Water Supply customers after a string of outages over several days. Some customers say they were left in the dark about what was happening.

The corner of North Glasscock Road and 5 Mile Line in Alton is where customers were affected by the outage.

One woman said she hopes it's the last time.

"It's sad, the fact that there's not the communication that we need to be able to move forward in that aspect," Alton business owner Esther Monsivais said.

Monsivais owns an insurance company in Alton. She says the water outage left her with questions and concerns.

"This is the first time we have encountered this problem at this scale," Monsivais said.

Monsivais first realized there was a problem Thursday evening, when the water stopped flowing at her business.

"I have my business here. I noticed that there was no water, and so we went home for the remainder of the day," Monsivais said.

Monsivais said the water came back on that same night, but the problem returned Friday and lasted until Sunday evening. Her mother-in-law was also affected.

"She had to go to Lowe's. She purchased a couple of jugs just to be able to fill in the tanks, and she says that it was taking over two and a half gallons of water just to fill up. She goes, 'I had to get five of the five gallons to just be able to survive just one day,'" Monsivais said.

Monsivais lives in Mission, where she is not connected to Sharyland Water Supply lines.

She says over the course of the outage, her family was traveling back and forth to her home just to shower, cook, and use the restroom.

Monsivais says getting answers from the water provider wasn't easy.

"My sister-in-law started calling the Sharyland Water, the city of Alton, trying to figure out what to do," Monsivais said.

Call logs show four calls were made to the water provider between Thursday and Saturday.

Monsivais says no call was ever answered or returned until Monday when water had already been restored.

"You know how long it was going to take that was not mentioned and how long, really, actually, how long it was going to take," Monsivais said.

Monsivais says the water finally came back on Sunday around 7 p.m. and stayed on. The family says no one was ever notified about an outage, how long it would last or how it was being addressed.

An outage notice was also never posted to the water provider's Facebook page, and that's what worries Monsivais the most.

"I started thinking about the rest of the neighborhood. Some people don't have family members they can reach out to and that was like, I'm part of that town. I mean, I help out in that neighborhood. So for me, it was just like, It's sad to know that they're going through that," Monsivais said.

Channel 5 News reached out to Sharyland Water Supply Corporation about Monsivais' concerns.

The company said emergency water system repairs began on Thursday and were completed Sunday. The repairs required the temporary shutdown of one of its water treatment plants, causing the water supply issues.

As for communication, the corporation said it remains committed to communicating with its members during emergencies.

The company also said 35 customers were affected by the outage, out of the more than 23,000 customers it serves.

For Monsivais' family, the water may be back, but they're already preparing for the possibility of another outage.

"She was like, 'I'm already getting the five gallons of water filled just in case,' and she's been doing that, even though she's scared it's going to happen again without notice," Monsivais said.

The water provider did let customers know on social media on Tuesday, Aug. 18, when repairs were complete and water service was restored.
