AUSTIN – The FBI is looking for the suspect in a 33-year-old Texas murder case. Authorities said they believe he may be hiding in Mexico.

Robert Van Wisse is accused of sexually assaulting and murdering a 22-year-old woman on Sept. 20, 1983 at the University of Texas at Austin campus.

The victim is Laurie Stout. She was working a late shift cleaning an administrative building on campus when she was killed.

Her daughter was only one-year-old at the time of the crime.

The suspect, Van Wisse, was a student at UT. Authorities said he was in the building registering for a class and was the last person seen in the building before the murder.

Police believe Van Wisse fled the Austin area when he learned he was a suspect.

He is from southern Mexico and authorities have received tips that he may be hiding somewhere in the country. Some tips authorities received over the years claimed he was in New York, Washington D.C., central Texas and in Guatemala.

Stout’s daughter said enough is enough and someone needs to come forward to give her family a chance at closure.

Van Weiss is 5-foot-6 with brown hair and eyes. The FBI has provided an age-progressed photo of what they believe he would look like now.

They’ve received tips in the past that he worked on a coconut and banana plantation in Mexico, while also teaching English.

He’s known to go by several different names including Francisco Salas, Robert Vanwise and Robert Wisse.

Anyone with information can call 1-800-CALL-FBI. A tip leading to an arrest is worth a reward of $100,000.
