A 32-year-old San Benito woman pleaded guilty to suffocating a 15-month-old child at the Harlingen daycare she worked at, court records show.

Belinda Perez pleaded guilty on Monday to a charge of injury to a child causing serious bodily injury. She was previously arrested on that charge and then was indicted for attempted capital murder in connection with the incident.

According to previous reports, officers with the Harlingen Police Department responded to a report of an unresponsive female child at the Little Red School House Child Development Center at 1502 Dixieland Rd. on June 27, 2024.

The toddler was hospitalized in an ICU in critical condition and later recovered.

The arrest report states the child had "agonal breathing" along with blue lips, hands, feet, and nose when police arrived.

The report says the daycare owner allowed Harlingen police officers to review security camera footage.

According to the arrest report, officers saw an employee identified as Perez picking the child up from the crib with her hands over the infant's mouth and then walk out of frame. The worker then came back into the frame and placed the child back into the crib.

Court records indicate that Perez is facing 15 years in prison. A sentencing date was not set as of Wednesday.
