Former Hidalgo County detention officer accused of striking handcuffed inmate
A Hidalgo County detention officer was fired and arrested after an investigation revealed he attacked a handcuffed inmate while on the job, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
Luis Vega was booked into the Hidalgo County jail on Thursday on a charge of official oppression. Jail records show he was released that same day on a $2,500 bond.
According to a news release, Vega’s arrest was the result of an investigation into a report of Vega striking the unidentified inmate multiple times in the face on Sept. 8. Vega was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, and he was fired on Monday.
“We are entrusted with the care and custody of inmates, and that responsibility we take very seriously,” Hidalgo County Sheriff J.E. “Eddie” Guerra said in a statement. “We do not tolerate this type of conduct. Our personnel are expected to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and accountability.”
The investigation is ongoing, the release added.
