Peñitas, TX (KRGV) — The Buckner Family Hope Center in Peñitas is expanding after it recently received funding to add two classrooms and a large gym.

The center helps children and families in low-income communities. The work should wrap up next summer.

“We've had many community events where we typically had to seek other locations," Buckner Rio Grande Valley Executive Director Criselda Cuevas said. "So it really wasn't a community event where our Peñitas community could come together locally."

The center will stay open during construction.
