The city of Harlingen is planning a $150,000 lighting project at Wilson Sports Complex as part of an effort to expand the facility for youth softball.

Right now, 41 of the complex's 160 sports lights are out. The city says repairing the system will allow all field lighting to work again.

Park officials say the lighting repairs are necessary before expanding use of the complex. Once the work is done, the city plans to convert the fields to serve both existing adult leagues and youth fast-pitch softball.

Officials estimate the repairs will take 30 to 60 days.

Harlingen Parks and Recreation Director Juan Mendiola III said safety is a concern.

“We're working on changing bulbs and doing the best we can to improve on those. But what it's going to do, it's going to help safety. We'll have all the sports field lighting working once this is done, once the funding is awarded to us,” Mendiola said.
