A San Benito woman is speaking out after her mother became one of four people killed on Sunday, and the Honduran national accused in the killings remains jailed in Cameron County with no bond.

Authorities said Christian Joel Maldonado Pacheco is in the country illegally, and they believe he is a flight risk.

According to the Cameron County Sheriff's Office, Pacheco confessed to the killings and said he was “tired of being bullied.” Investigators are still looking into that claim.

Alba Cortez said losing her mother, 67-year-old Leticia Vargas Fernandez, has been difficult to process. Three of the four victims were found inside a San Benito home in the 32000 block of Road 819.

Cortez said she found out something was wrong after her sister called her in the middle of the night.

"Something was going on; even she didn't understand what was happening, and then she called me and I came over. When I got here, there were a lot of police officers here," Cortez said.

When Cortez arrived, deputies with the Cameron County Sheriff's Office were already there. She later learned from investigators that Pacheco was in custody.

Cortez said the loss is harder to understand because of the close relationship her mother had with Pacheco.

"About four years ago, he came looking for some help. My mom offered him a room in her house, and over time we started living together as a family," Cortez said.

Cortez said Pacheco was even part of family gatherings and that her mother saw him as a son.

"She told me, 'My son came over and brought me some juice,' and to her, he was like her son," Cortez said.

Now, Cortez said she is left with one question she cannot answer.

"We want justice. We want all of this to be cleared up, so we can find out what the motive was — or the reason — why he changed so much toward her," Cortez said.
