Hidalgo County has a new council made up of young people.

The Hidalgo County Commissioners Court recognized the Hidalgo County Future Leaders Council during their Sept. 15 meeting. The council is part of a push to get young adults involved in local government.

"Our council's number one goal is to retain and attract the young people in Hidalgo County," Hidalgo County Future Leaders Council Chairman Skyler Howell said.

The council currently has 16 members.

"If we do a good enough job, we're gonna show other counties and other regions that if you put young people in a position to have a seat at the table, then not only are those young people going to succeed, but the county and the community is gonna succeed," Howell said.
