IBWC Report Card: Valley International Dams Well Maintained
WESLACO – The latest safety inspections for Rio Grande Valley international dams were released.
The International Boundary and Water Commission and the U.S. and Mexican governments conduct safety dam inspections every five years. They rate the safety inspection 1 through 5, with one being considered to be unsafe and five, normal or safe conditions.
The Anzalduas Dam was rated as a Category 4, marginally safe with concerns on how much weight a dam can hold.
The Retamal Dam and the Falcon Dam are at a Category 3, which is considered a "high priority", conditionally unsafe.
Investigators found all dams are well maintained and capable of operating under normal flood conditions.
