A Cameron County judge is set to decide whether the man accused in a deadly Brownsville library shooting will go to trial.

Humberto Paz was in court Monday morning. He is accused of shooting and killing a 71-year-old Vahid Khaledi inside the Brownsville Public Library in May 2024.

A year ago, Paz was found incompetent to stand trial, but in court, a judge said Paz has regained competency, according to a doctor.

The judge is set to make a decision in September on whether Paz is competent to stand trial.

Attorneys for Paz told the court they still need to file motions. If Paz is found competent, then a jury trial will move forward.
