The La Joya Independent School District is investigating two security-related incidents at two of its campuses less than three weeks into the new school year.

According to news releases sent by the district, the first incident happened on Aug. 21 at Tabasco Elementary School when a teacher discovered a box cutter inside a student’s backpack.

“The box cutter was not used to threaten or harm any student or staff member,” Tabasco Elementary Principal Yesenia Lugo said. “Campus administration responded immediately.”

Administrators later learned that same student made a verbal threat involving a firearm, and law enforcement officers conducted an “appropriate follow-up” at the student’s home, Lugo added.

“At this time there is no known threat to Tabasco Elementary, our students, or our staff,” the statement reads.

The second incident happened Monday at Cesar Chavez Middle School after a student allegedly sent messages referencing a firearm and a possible threat. The district said the threat turned out to be non-credible.

“School administrators and law enforcement have taken appropriate measures in response to the situation,” the district said.

Channel 5 News is continuing to ask the district questions regarding both incidents and is still waiting to hear back.
