New Brownsville PUB program will notify customers of water leaks
Brownsville, TX (KRGV) — The Brownsville Public Utilities Board will start a new program to notify customers about water leaks.
The utility will use a new advanced metering infrastructure system to find leaks starting on Nov. 1, 2026. BPUB spokesperson Alexa Perez said the smart meters will help spot extended water flow.
“That means that whenever our system notices that a customer is using water for prolonged periods of time, we're going to be providing a notification to them via text or via email,” Perez said. “This notification will be every 24 hours, weekly, or biweekly depending on the consumption. All the messages will come from the number 96681, or if it is via email, it will come from a no-reply email from BPUB.”
The utility said it will not ask for money through these alerts.
Customers who get a notice of continuous water use or have questions can call BPUB's customer service line.
