Before the coronavirus pandemic, experts have been saying foster youth are a disadvantaged group in need of more resources.

The outcome for children aging out of the foster care system can be summarized in four concepts, according to experts – homelessness, lack of support, incarceration and unemployment.

“They have no ability of getting a job right now. They have no ability of showing that they have income right now, and so they don't have the ability to go and get an apartment. And so due to that, they're becoming homeless,” explained Andi Harrison, regional director foster care and adoption for the Rio Grande Valley at Buckner International.

Harrison says trauma is a big part of what also keeps children in foster care at a disadvantage.
