Residents Upset with Ongoing 'Sludge' Seeping out of Sewer
WESLACO – Several Weslaco residents said they want the city to stop sludge from bubbling up from under their street.
People living in an apartment complex said they often have to jump over the sludge. They said it’s not the first time they’ve addressed it to the city.
Resident Reina Campos said she can see the black, gooey stuff seep out of the sewers from her apartment.
“When it rains, the water from the drainage starts coming up. It’s like not only water. It’s also toilet paper and things like that,” she said.
Campos said the area floods the intersection and leaves a residue behind.
“This is it. This is what comes out. Some kind of sludge you don’t want to touch. You don’t really want to get your nose close. It doesn’t smell good,” she said.
Weslaco student Alexa Vasquez said she’s had to jump over the sludge on her way home from school.
“The last time, I totally forgot that was there. I stepped in it. It was nasty,” she said.
Other families complained the smell wafts into their homes and interrupts dinner.
CHANNEL 5 NEWS tried contacting the city of Weslaco to see if there can be a permanent solution. We weren’t able to reach somebody due to today’s holiday.
Campos said it’s hopeless because it happens again every time it rains.
“No matter who’s in the city hall, who takes the position, they don’t do anything about this,” she said.
Weslaco cleanup crews went to the area on Monday to clean up what they could.
