MCALLEN - People living the Rio Grande Valley and who are Mexican citizens are hustling to get documentation from their consulate.

The Mexican consulate was packed on Wednesday. The family we spoke to said they spent their entire lives in the U.S. They’re now scrambling to get up to date with their Mexican paperwork.

We were also surprised to find they were seeking paperwork for a U.S. citizen.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS interviewed a 23-year-old who considers Texas his home. He asked us not to reveal his name. He said his family crossed the border illegally when he was just three months old.

“It’s all I know, you know? All I know is Texas. I don’t know Mexico,” he said. “I go to work thinking, ‘What if they stop my mom? What if they stop my dad? What if they stop my sister? What’s going to happen then? What if they stop me?’ It’s an uneasy feeling, an unsafe feeling.”

He said his family decided to go to the Mexican consulate and obtain documentation.

“My sister, my mom, my dad, they’ve all gotten their passports. We’re getting ready for anything,” he said.

The family is also working to get his youngest sibling, a U.S. citizen, Mexican documentation. Their goal is to stay united on one side of the border or the other.

“He says the United States, that’s his country and he tells us, ‘Why do you want to leave?’” he said.

The 23-year-old said without proper documentation, his younger brother would be forced to live in Mexico illegally. He said the alternative would be for him to stay in the country without family.

“We’re trying to get him his double citizenship, Mexican passport, American passport. We’re trying to get him all his papers,” he said.

The man we spoke with said he was deported less than a decade ago. He said it’s wasn’t his choice to enter the U.S. illegally the first time. For him, Mexico remains an unknown territory.
