Stabbing Incident Raises Security Concerns for UTRGV Students
EDINBURG – Students at a local university are reacting to the fatal stabbing incident in Austin.
One person died and three others were injured after being stabbed at the University of Texas’ main campus.
Police said 21-year-old Kendrex J White, a UT student, was identified as the suspect. Students present near the central campus reported White was armed with a hunting knife.
There is no immediate word about a possible motive.
University of Texas Rio Grande Valley student Luis Villarreal said he fears he may have to take extra precautions following Monday’s incident.
“It’s concerning really because you know that things like that can happen. Obviously, it worries you,” he said.
UTRGV Police Chief Raul Mungia said campus police go through trainings to react quickly and protect their students if a similar situation arises.
He added UTRGV staff and students can also be trained under a program called Civilian Response to Active Shooting Events (CRASE).
Mungia said the program allows students to remain vigilant in a potentially dangerous situation. He said it could give students those crucial extra minutes before police can arrive.
“Everything helps, you know… When you try to fix one program, there are maybe – there’s not only one solution. (It) could be a process or you might need to have different plans you want to take,” he said.
Villarreal said he was unaware of the CRASE program, but will be taking precautionary steps to keep safe.
Students and staff can contact UTRGV police to inquire about the training.
