Laredo, TX (KRGV) — Rep. Henry Cuellar’s district office received a suspicious package on Tuesday, and staff evacuated as a precaution, according to a statement from his campaign.

All of Cuellar’s staff got out safely, the statement said. A staffer who opened the package is undergoing a precautionary health screening.

“Henry Cuellar is thankful for the swift response of law enforcement today in response to a suspicious package delivered to Congressman Cuellar’s official office,” the statement reads. “While we await further information on the content and motivations behind this package, this much is clear: violence has no place in politics. Intimidation has no place in politics. Polls remain open, and our message to South Texans is this: get out and vote.”

Cuellar is facing Webb County Judge Tano Tijerina in Tuesday’s election for the 28th Congressional District.
