McAllen, TX (KRGV) — McAllen High School senior Addison Humphreys balances award-winning rodeo events with a service effort that has sent more than 6,500 books and 22 laptops to schools and libraries in Reynosa.

Humphreys has spent six years in barrel racing, pole bending, straightaway barrel racing, goat tying, and goat exhibition. She has earned ribbons and belt buckles through those events.

Four years ago, she founded Books 2 Borders.

"What really is what brings me joy is just giving students opportunities that they may not have had before." Addison said.

As of today, Books 2 Borders has served more than 2,500 students. The effort has collected more than 6,500 books and 22 laptops for schools and libraries across the border in Reynosa.

Last year, doctors diagnosed Addison with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease.

“Some things that come with that are just really low energy, and brain fog, so it affects my work ability, it affects my energy, and that's really difficult being someone who has so many commitments,” Addison said.

She says supplements and routine checkups have helped her do better today.

The experience led to an interest in medicine. Addison has taken part in GEAR UP and the DHR Health laser research program, and earlier this year she was elected the area and Texas HOSA state president.

Through a partnership with the Yale School of Medicine, Humphreys is also a youth ambassador for the BE FAST campaign. She has helped teach more than 2,000 students about stroke awareness.

Last year, she was named a Carson Scholar and interviewed Dr. Ben Carson, the former secretary of Housing & Urban Development, at the ceremony. At McAllen High School, she is in the top 4% of her class.

"Despite all of that, all of her greatness, she remains humble and grounded, and all she wants is to lift everyone around her," McAllen High School English teacher Janine Bounous said.

After high school, Addison hopes to go pre-med at Rice University to be a doctor.

“I am very passionate about oncology. The DHR oncology space is full of really incredible people,” Addison said. "I've gotten to shadow two doctors from there, and they've just been very inspiring."

This fall, Channel 5 News will be highlighting 10 students who shine in and out of the classroom.

The students have already been selected.
