Harlingen is getting a new walk and bike trail, and the state is picking up the entire tab.

The city locked in a deal with the Texas Department of Transportation to finish the design. The trail will cost $5.9 million, fully funded by the state with no local money required.

The 5.5-mile trail will run along Harrison Drive to Expressway 77. It will be 12 feet wide and include solar-powered lighting, shaded rest areas, and an emergency call station.

"This is important to residents here because we are promoting being an active community," Harlingen City Engineer Roberto Hernandez said. "It ensures the residents are living a longer and healthier life."

The city expects the project to be completed by 2028.
