RGV Red Crowns prepare for the U.S. Open Cup Qualifying
The RGV Red Crowns are heading into their first U.S. Open Cup qualifying in just their second year as a club.
The team not only qualified for the Open Cup but also earned a first round bye and will host the second round against the Central Texas Coyotes, a team they beat twice during the regular season.
This year's Red Crowns roster is made up of mostly Rio Grande Valley players.
The match is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, 2026 at the Harlingen Field.
"It's the highest of honors that there is. We're representing the whole Valley, many cities. We're representing all the kids that have dreams that seek the opportunity to play at these high levels is amazing," Midfielder Vicente Alvarez said. "I think it's everything that this club has been wanting since the first day and to be able to say that it's achieved and it will still continue to be achievable is the best thing."
Head Coach Rafael Reyna said the team is focused on making the most of the moment.
"We're hoping that we can maximize it and make the most of this opportunity come Saturday come gameday and see if we can continue to extend this run," Reyna said.
