EDINBURG – Students are raising concerns over motorists ignoring a popular crosswalk near the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley Edinburg campus.

Several people tell CHANNEL 5 NEWS there have been too many close calls on the crosswalk between Sugar Road and W McIntyre Street.

“I was crossing the street. I was about halfway across when there was a car that had been way at the beginning when I first started crossing that just kept going right in front of me,” explains UTRGV student Mayela Cavazos.

KRGV’s Cecilia Gutierrez reached out to the Edinburg Police Department to clarify who has the right of way.

A spokesperson says if a driver fails to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, they can be fined; the same goes to anyone caught jaywalking on roadways.
