Bella Michaels

Bella Michaels joined KRGV in September 2021 after graduating from DePaul University with her master's degree in Journalism.

Bella is a first-generation American and speaks five languages, including Spanish and Italian. She's proud of her Assyrian/Aramaic roots.

Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois -- Bella grew up a Chicago sports fan. That led to her pursuing a degree in Journalism with a focus on sports. During that time, Bella covered NBA All-Star 2020 in Chicago. She interviewed stars like Charles Barkley, Luka Doncic, Trae Young, and more.

During her college years, Bella was a guest on Chicago 670 The Score's Laurence Holmes podcast House of L, and worked as a production assistant for WTTW's Chicago Tonight with highly-esteemed Chicago news journalist, Carol Marin and Don Moseley. Bella also interned at the Chicago Tribune, where she was a contributor/reporter for the 2018 World Cup. She also freelanced at beIN Sports in Miami. Bella also wrote for the DePaulia newspaper and had her own radio show "Talk Soccer to Me" at Radio DePaul.

Bella was presented with an Outstanding Achievement in Journalism Award as Graduate Student of the Year at DePaul in 2021. She was the graduate assistant for the broadcast journalism program and worked closely with the DePaul Men's basketball team. She is also a member of the Mass Communications/Journalism Committee at College of DuPage, where she received her associate's degree and served as vice president of the school's Italian Club during her time there.

After moving to the Rio Grande Valley, Bella expanded on her passion for developing meaningful connections with the sports community members, by telling emotional feature stories. Stories that are more meaningful than just highlight packages or quick interviews, rather digging deep into the personal side of an athlete or coach beyond their sport. Bella created her own series, "Coffee with Coaches," where she sits down and has coffee with a coach, while they open up about their personal or emotional experiences outside of their sport.

That passion for feature storytelling led Bella to cross over to the news side, to tell even more stories beyond sports. Formerly a Sports MMJ, Bella is now a weekend news anchor and weekday news reporter. She is using her multilingual skills and desire to break barriers, to tell more impactful stories within the RGV community.

In her personal time, Bella's probably singing, watching movies, or learning new languages. She is a big cinephile, meaning she loves film! She was a thespian in high school, spending most of her time singing and performing in theater.
