MISSION – They say it takes a village to raise a child.

That village showed their support Saturday morning for Joaquin Espericueta, son to fallen Mission officer Cpl. Jose “Speedy” Espericueta.

“We all made a promise to each other that we were going to watch over the families if something did happen to us. He would have done it for mine, so I went and stepped in to fill that void that he left behind,” said Officer Javier Lara with the Mission Police Department.

Joaquin participated in his first middle school football game over the weekend, an event his father was waiting to be a part of.

Despite his absence, Joaquin felt nothing but support on the field.
