Fallen Korean War Hero Commemorated in Hometown after His Remains Return to Texas
RIO GRANDE CITY – A very significant service ahead of Memorial Day.
In Rio Grande City, the day will be dedicated to all the fallen service members from Starr County.
Eighteen-year-old Army Pfc. Herschel M. Riggs, originally from Rio Grande City, is included in the dedication.
Riggs was not able to make it home when he was declared missing in action during the Korean War in July 1950; then three years later, declared deceased.
His remains were retrieved Oct. 1950, but had never been identified until last month through DNA testing.
A commemoration in his honor took place Friday morning in his hometown.
