Pharr, TX (KRGV) — Pharr firefighters battled a warehouse fire overnight after heavy flames and smoke forced crews out of the building and hurt one firefighter, according to the Pharr Fire Department.
The fire started around 8 p.m. in the 1100 block of Albrad Avenue at a warehouse used to store medical supplies. Within minutes, crews ran into heavy smoke and flames and five neighboring fire departments came in to help, including Mission and McAllen.
The fire was extinguished at 3:14 a.m. Tuesday and no further injuries were reported.
Firefighters attempted to fight the fire from inside the warehouse, but they had to leave the building as conditions got worse.
Two propane tanks also exploded. Crews then fought the fire from outside the building and used a ladder truck to spray water from above.
"They encountered heavy flames and smoke coming from the building itself. They tried an interior attack, but due to the amount of fire inside the warehouse, they had to evacuate and we went defensive right now," Pharr Fire Department Deputy Chief of Operations David Martinez said.
Officials took one firefighter to the hospital for possible dehydration. They said the firefighter was doing well.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
