1 Dead, 1 Injured in Head-On Collision in Brownsville

UPDATE (4:00 p.m.) – The driver killed in a Brownsville head-on collision was identified.

DPS Lt. Johnny Hernandez said 22-year-old Gary Sturgill from Brownsville was killed in the crash. The accident happened in front of the shrimp basin at the Port of Brownsville.

The passenger in the SUV, along with Sturgill, is in critical condition.

BROWNSVILLE – A man is dead and another is in critical condition after a head-on collision with an 18-wheeler.

The accident happened just before 9:00 Tuesday morning in front of the shrimp basin at the Port of Brownsville.

DPS troopers said the two men were in a SUV going towards the island on Highway 48.

Troopers said they had a blow out and veered into oncoming traffic. The SUV then collided with a recycling truck.

Both men were taken to the hospital, where the driver of the SUV later died.

Officials said the driver of the 18-wheeler didn’t suffer major injuries.
