Alamo enforcing deadline to remove campaign signs
Alamo, TX (KRGV) — Alamo candidates have 15 days after Election Day to remove campaign signs across the city or face fines and removal by the city, according to Mayor J.R. Garza.
Campaign signs are still up near the Alamo Public Library, which served as a polling location.
"They get in the way when someone goes to get the mail or pay the water bill. You can't see clearly. They block everything," Alamo resident Rosalba Reyes said.
Reyes said she does not drive, but she sees the signs almost every day when she runs errands with her niece. She said the signs packed together near the library make it harder to see.
"My niece can't see. She has to move to the side to get a better look because they're all so close together," Reyes said.
The city put the ordinance in place about a year or two ago after getting complaints about signs being left behind or blowing away.
Garza said the city can remove signs left up after the deadline without warning.
"That happens quite a bit, and that is why this ordinance was put into place for that exact reason. We want to make sure that, you know, we respect the residents' wishes and that we keep our city clean," Garza said.
Candidates could face fines for leaving signs up.
"That fine can range anywhere from $25 upwards to $50, just depending upon the size of the sign and the area that it's in. Obviously any signs at polling locations have to be removed immediately," Garza said.
Reyes said she is glad to see the signs come down, but she thinks 15 days is too long.
"Fifteen days is way too long. They should be gone. They should take them down tomorrow," Reyes said.
