Hidalgo County, TX (KRGV) — Hidalgo County voters replaced Monica De La Cruz with Bobby Pulido, which means all three congressional representatives for the area will be Democrats in January.

The election results were part of a surge that propelled Democrats to several victories across the state, including in the governor's and Senate races.

Channel 5 News spoke with voters who said immigration enforcement and rising costs drove them to the polls. Voters said they want action on the issues that brought them out.

South Texas College Political Science Instructor Kevin Holton believes frustration with immigration policies and rising costs helped Democratic candidates on the ballot.

"I think a lot of it was frustration that people were venting against the Trump administration," Holton said. "I think they're going to have to look more closely at the bread and butter issues that people are concerned about, especially if the economy doesn't improve over the next two years."

In Cameron County, Republican Party Chair Jim Birschbach said younger voters turned out and supported the other side, and he said the party needs to do a better job explaining issues like healthcare and affordability.

"We've got to do a better job of reaching the 40 and under," Birschbach said.

James Talarico is the first Democrat elected to the U.S. Senate from Texas since 1988. Brownsville native Gina Hinojosa defeated incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott, making her the first Democrat elected Texas governor since 1990.

Eighteen statewide offices in Texas flipped to Democrats, flipping the state House.

"I don't know that many people thought that what happened last night would even be possible," Texas Democratic Party Chairman Kendall Scudder said.

Birschbach told Channel 5 News the party will continue to work on its policies come Jan. 1. Democrats will get to work with the new leadership at the state level.
